Make Online Courses

Develop, produce and publish your own online course(s).

Do you have something you want to tell the world? Do you have a skill that you want to help others acquire? Maybe you have seen many other people struggle thru a task that you find not that difficult because you do it differently than how they do it. You can help them do it differently too.

C.S. Lewis, the famed author, said and I quote: “Experience: that most brutal of teachers. But you learn, my God do you learn.” Did you go through a life experience where you learned a lot from? Share it so that others can learn.

Perhaps it is how you dealt with a situation or a health issue in a creative or unconventional way - is that learning experience something you want to help others with? If so, why wait?Maybe you need to create a training video for your work, or for a product you sell. A good training video could reduce the number of support calls or returns from your customers. It could even help your prospective customer make a decision to buy your product.

My name is Alain Gauthier and I have been teaching adults and young adults since the mid-80s, producing online courses since 2009. I would love to share what I learned about developing online courses with you.

The first thing I learned is that since people have been learning by watching and listening for years, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. We know that learning by reading only works for a minority of people. It makes only sense then, to do what you would actually do when teaching a friend or a classroom full of people. You stand up and tell them about your topic. The only difference now is that you have a camera and a mic to record you.
The second thing I learned is that just standing in front of a camera and reading your course notes is not going to work very well. What you need to add is a few skills, that we will teach you in this course.
When it comes to the equipment, you will be surprised what you can get away with and produce quality e-learning videos.
When I decided to publish my first online course in 2009, I took a 5-day course I had been teaching to hundreds of students in a classroom, within a few months, that course was published online. It was a licensing course for insurance professionals. The course was difficult, with lots of information to absorb for the students and the stakes were high. They could not get a job in the insurance industry without passing a very intense licensing exam.I make a few mistakes along the way. I knew my material and had great results in the classroom. Most of my students passed the licensing exam -that was above the provincial average for other training facilities in the province. However, when it came to developing online courses, I spent a lot of time and money to learn on how to do it right. Unfortunately, I often got bad advice. Bad advice on how to do it right, and even worst advice on what equipment to do it with.

Most of the courses I found on the Internet were focused on the money side of the online publishing business and so were very light on the technical side. Actually, most of those people were the only ones making money with their courses.

So, at the end, I was left ill-equipped to produce a quality online course. And, I knew that I had to deliver quality because the competition was strong in my field. I help on, learn from experience and my success is the 'proof in the pudding' and the rest is history.
